English Premier League Week 30 Match Reviews

This Premier League Weekend held some upsets and big wins for some teams. I’m going to give a quick review of these important matches this week.

Chelsea vs West Brom- This game probably looked like a one sided game but it went totally the other way. The scoring started in the 27th minute when the Chelsea American striker Christian Pulisic finally scored for the Blues under Thomas Tuchel. The game immediately changed when Chelsea’s defender Thiago Silva who just came back from injury got his second yellow which equaled a red card. West Brom missed so many chances but finally took advantage of their man edge. Matheus Periera completed his brace with 2 goals in two minutes in the midst of the 45th minute stoppage time to give the Baggies a 2-1 lead right before halftime. The 2nd Half was even worse for Chelsea as they got stomped by the 19th place team. Callum Robinson made it 3 right before Mbaye Diagne made it 4, 5 minutes later. Mason Mount made it 4-2 to give the Blues some hope 3 minutes later but they could not. To finish the game, Robinson completed his brace 3 minutes into stoppage time. The final score was 5-2 and it was a very disappointing loss for Chelsea but a huge win for Sam Allardyce’s  team.

Leicester City vs Manchester City- The Foxes won the reverse fixture at the beginning of the season 5-2 but this time was the opposite. In the 1st Half, The Cityzens had the ball for most of the time but couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net and it was scoreless halfway into the game. The 2nd Half Man City totally controlled. They finally scored and it was their left back Mendy who struck in the 58th minute with a great shot. City doubled their lead when Sterling passed to Gabriel Jesus who tucked away the pass from close range. The held on and extended their gap from the Red Devils who have 11 points in their last 5 games. Teams are getting close to Leicester so they are in trouble currently and need to get some wins.

Arsenal vs Liverpool- This game was a big game for Liverpool and the Gunners who were both trying to get wins at the Emirates. The 1st Half, like Manchester City’s game vs pretty dull but Liverpool had most of the possession. The 2nd Half in contrast to the 1st Half, was much much more exciting, for Liverpool fans at least. The nightmare for Arsenal fans started in the 64th minute. Diogo Jota, who came on the field in the 61st minute scored a lovely goal. Trent Alexander Arnold delivered another one of his legendary crosses which found the head of the Portugese striker who made no mistake and powered the ball past Leno. Liverpool scored again four minutes later when Fabinho passed deep to Salah who sprinted into the penalty area. It didn’t look like he would score but he megged Leno and doubled his team’s lead. They tripled it fourteen minutes later when Jota scored his 2nd of the night with a smashing finish to get a brace. This was a final score and it was another terrible loss for Arsenal as their Europa League hopes faded away for next year unless they win the competition. Liverpool are back in the Champions League race because they are now in 5th place.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham- This game was pretty exciting and had a lot of action in it. Steve Bruce’s side surprisingly scored 1st. Joelinton scored to give his team an important lead as they were trying to stay away from relegation. The Spurs didn’t let that happiness last long. Harry Kane tapped a simple finish two minutes later and then scored again 4 minutes later to give Tottenham the lead. A brace from him gave the Spurs a big boost in the hunt for a European competition for next year. Tottenham kept their lead until the 85th minute when they broke. The ball deflected off a Spurs defender and fell to the United substitute who blasted the ball to equalize. The final score was 2-2 and it was not the most ideal result for both squads.

Aston Villa vs Fulham- This game was another exciting game this weekend. The 1st Half was scoreless but the 2nd Half contained four goals. Fulham scored 1st when Aleksander Mitrovic scored in the 61st minute from a Mings mistake in the back. The game turned around when Trezeguet came on fresh off the bench. He scored 16 minutes from when he came on in the 78th minute with a good strike to tie this game. He scored again three minutes later to complete his brace and give Villa the lead in the 81st minute. After a few minutes, Ollie Watkins who had been in super form sealed the victory in the 87th minute to take this club into 9th place. Fulham collapsed after they scored and could not hold on to their advantage in this game.  It was a big win for the Lions and a heartbreaking loss for the Cottagers.

All these games had important results at either ends of the table and had a few upsets. A lot of players scored braces and this weekend had some high scoring games too.

  1. Raghav,
Your dad passed along your blog link to me, and I have to say that after reading through some of your posts, I was pleasantly surprised as to how great of a writer you are; very articulate and you keep the topics at hand interesting to watch and read more about. I wish I had more to say about these posts but I truly do not watch any sporting events these days besides the late rounds of the tennis majors whenever I get the chance.
Perhaps you’ll expand to writing about tennis events at some point if so inspired, then you may catch me in the comments section debating you! 😁 haha.
Hope to see you again soon on the courts! Keep up the good work, and stay well. Warm regards to you and everyone!
    Peace,
    Sulay

  2. Raghav, I just wanted to say I get a lot of enjoyment reading your sports blogs. You certainly have a good future as a writer if that’s what you want to do.
