West Ham played outstanding against Chelsea and put on a show for their fans. We saw persistent defense, clinical shooting, and a heck of a shot from them in that game. The back three did a really good job with help from Declan Rice and the other midfielders as well. It was a team effort to beat Chelsea and stay in the top four of the table.
At the beginning, they were really deep and were holding on. After Chelsea scored, that was a wake-up call for them. They had a chance which was saved on the line and finally scored in the 40th minute. The press by Bowen was fantastic and he pressured Mendy who could have cleared the ball out of harm’s way but held on. Bowen won the penalty and Lanzini calmly scored to equalize. That was a huge goal to get the crowd going and the players going as well. They conceded at the brink of halftime to Mount but overall was a pretty good half for the Hammers.
The second half was an amazing performance by them. They tied the game after Antonio passed back to Jarrod Bowen who clinically finished with his left foot into the left corner. Chelsea made some attacking subs after that but the Hammers defense kept them out. In the 86th minute, the unlikeliest of sources in Arthur Masuaku delivered the most bizarre of goals. They took a quick throw deep in Chelsea’s half and he held onto the ball for a bit before releasing it. He faked once and it looked like he was going to cross so Mendy moved more to the far post. He lobbed it up and it somehow found the back of the net. I wasn’t sure if he was trying to shoot or cross but Mendy overplayed it and Masuaku won the game for Chelsea. Mendy probably should have saved it but overcommitted and it just wasn’t one of his good games.
My player of the match was Jarrod Bowen. He was pressing for them, scored a slick goal, and won the penalty. He was all over the field and was constantly running. He gave life to the West Ham forwards and was a big part of their big win.
West Ham won and took a well deserved three points at London Stadium. They were resilient and took advantage of the opportunities they got. They handed Chelsea their 2nd loss of the season in a stunning performance on home soil.
